Hello my dog loving friends. DIY Steve here, and today I’m gonna share a couple of DIY dog treats recipes. Our family has two dogs – a Berner and a Pugalier – and wow do they love their treats. As I’m sure all our dogs do! So if you want to save a little money and know exactly what goes into your dog treats, then these recipes are for your fur babies!
As always, take precautions to make sure these treats are good for your dog. Check with your vet or give only a small taste before letting Rover chow down on a whole biscuit. The ingredients are all dog-friendly, but better safe than sorry.
We have two recipes in this post – a peanut butter and banana dog treat recipe and a pumpkin and oats recipe. Ok – let’s get baking!
Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Treats
Ingredients:
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/3 cup dry milk
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, which is harmful to dogs)
- 1/2 cup mashed banana
- 1 large egg
- Water (as needed to adjust the dough consistency)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and dry milk.
- In a separate microwave-safe bowl, warm the peanut butter until it’s easy to mix, but not hot. About 20-30 seconds in the microwave should be enough.
- Add the mashed banana and egg to the peanut butter, mixing well.
- Pour the peanut butter mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until well combined. If the dough is too dry, add water a tablespoon at a time until it comes together.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. You can use cookie cutters to create fun shapes for your dog treats.
- Place the cut-out shapes on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until the treats are golden brown.
- Allow the treats to cool completely before serving them to your dog.
Pumpkin and Oat Dog Treats
Ingredients:
- 2 cups oat flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin (make sure it’s pure pumpkin puree without added sugar or spices)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine oat flour and rolled oats. If you don’t have oat flour, you can make your own by pulsing regular oats in a blender or food processor until finely ground.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the canned pumpkin, applesauce, egg, and cinnamon (if using).
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a bit more oat flour.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to create shapes or simply cut the dough into squares.
- Place the cut-out shapes on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 12-15 minutes or until the treats are firm and lightly golden.
- Allow the treats to cool completely before serving them to your dog.
