DIY Water Based Lubricant

DIY Water Based Lubricant

Creating a DIY water-based lubricant is possible and quite easy with simple, natural ingredients. Store-bought products aren’t always right for everyone.  Keep in mind, though, that while these ingredients are generally safe for most people, individual sensitivities vary.  Please perform a patch test before using this DIY water-based lubricant or any DIY product. If irritation occurs, immediately discontinue use.  Let’s get started!

Ingredients for a DIY Water Based Lubricant:

  • 1 cup of distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon of xanthan gum (natural thickener)
  • Optional: 1-2 drops of chamomile essential oil or lavender essential oil (for fragrance)

Instructions:

  1. Sterilize Your Tools:
    • Before you begin, ensure that all tools and containers are clean and sterilized to prevent contamination. Boil them for five minutes and let them air dry.
  2. Mix the Xanthan Gum:
    • In a small bowl, sprinkle the xanthan gum over the distilled water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to hydrate.
  3. Stir Well:
    • Using a whisk or fork, vigorously stir the mixture until the xanthan gum is fully dissolved. This might take a few minutes. The mixture will eventually thicken.
  4. Add Aloe Vera Gel:
    • Incorporate the aloe vera gel into the mixture. Aloe vera is known for its moisturizing and soothing properties.
  5. Optional: Add Essential Oil:
    • If you want to add a fragrance to your lubricant, include 1-2 drops of chamomile or lavender essential oil. Stir well to combine.
  6. Adjust Consistency (Optional):
    • If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little more distilled water until you achieve the desired consistency.
  7. Transfer to Container:
    • Pour the mixture into a clean, airtight container. A small squeeze bottle works well for easy application.
  8. Label the Container:
    • Clearly label the container with the date of preparation and the ingredients used.
  9. Store in a Cool Place:
    • Keep the lubricant in a cool, dark place. Shake well before each use, as natural ingredients may settle over time.

Important Notes:

  • Do not use this lubricant with latex condoms, as oil-based or homemade products can weaken latex.
  • This DIY lubricant is water-based and may need to be reapplied as it may dry out faster than commercial products.
  • If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately.

Remember, commercial lubricants undergo testing for safety and efficacy. DIY versions do not have the same level of quality control. If you have specific health concerns or sensitivities, consult a healthcare professional before using any DIY products.
